R.I.P. to “60 is the new 30!” comment

“You look good for your age.”

I hear this constantly from, I’d like to think, well-meaning people 20 to 30 years my junior.

A controversial comment — yes?

It’s also an insulting comment for many women — a slick way of denouncing the natural progression and beauty of age; a derogatory comment that reeks of ageism and its sole purpose to perpetuate the thought that younger is always better.

I’m not sure whether it’s my physical appearance, lively personality, high activity level, or a combo of all three.

The ’40-years-my-junior’ set voice it differently:

“Black don’t crack.”

Meanwhile, I’m re-wiping my bifocals to see my computer screen clearly; excusing myself away from a conversation to pee again; and as I write this, trying to remember the name of the celebrity whose face I can see — without picking up my phone to Google her information.

It’s what you present on the outside for them.

Radiating a youthful image; that’s what it’s all about.

The ability to:

  • fit into skinny jeans, skimpy bathing suits, and…
